Mountain Boarding

Mountain Boarding

In a nutshell:
A cross between skateboarding, surfing and snowboarding on dry land.

Mountain BoardTell me more!
Also known as grass or all terrain boarding, mountain boarding is an ideal outdoors pastime that works well on hilly and uneven terrain – freely available to many people in our Great British countryside! Classed by many as an extreme sport, simply climb a hill, strap your feet onto the board and experience an adrenaline fuelled rush from the top to the bottom. As a sport, it can be more weather accessible to people than snowboarding or surfing and creates an interesting twist on basic skateboarding.

Boy in safety gearThe stuff you need
Lessons for children and adults can be found at many of the specialist mountain boarding centres based around the country, giving you the chance to cheaply hire different types of boards before investing in your own. You can expect to fall over many times (whether you are a total newbie or seasoned rider of similar sports) as your feet are strapped to the board, so protection is a must! Long sleeves and trousers combined with elbow and knee pads, wrist guards and helmet are a good start. You may already have some of these items if you have previously skateboarded or ridden a bike and so you can upgrade to mountain board specific items such as a helmet with faceguard. Brake kits can be purchased and fitted to most boards for those of you who want to take it very steady.

Although a fairly new sport, you can take lessons to get you started and there are. Just like skiing, you can learn on nursery slopes, building up your skills and confidence before attempting the bad boy slopes! There are competitions you can take part in and like skate and snowboarding, tricks, jumps and freestyle moves can be learned to wow the crowds. Kite boarding is a natural progression for some whereas others may risk the elements and try more established sports of snow boarding or surfing.
