Job Hunting Tips

Are you looking for a job in the outdoors? This section aims to answer a few of the frequently asked questions for anyone looking to turn their passion for the outdoors into a rewarding career.

How Do I Get Started?

Most entry level jobs in the outdoors are seasonal vacancies offering temporary employment with or without accommodation, but it is possible to find a permanent position from the outset, particularly at Centres operated by local authorities. Senior vacancies are usually only available to applicants with a few years seasonal experience behind them.

When Can I Work?

Season dates vary for each sector. Most European Adventure & Watersports Centres employ staff during the April - September period, but some centres operate for a longer season that can run from February to October/November.

Where Can I Find Jobs?

If you are looking for a local part time job at an Outdoor Centre you could contact them directly or visit their web site to see if they have an online contact form and/or more information on vacancies for casual staff. If you are looking for work further afield the best source of job vacancies is from online outdoor job sites like OutdoorStaff.co.uk . You will probably be required to apply online in the first instance before being invited for a face to face or telephone interview.

What Are Employers Looking For?

You don’t always have to be qualified to apply for an outdoor job but it helps! If you have a high level of personal proficiency in a particular outdoor activity this will help your application. You may even be eligible for a trainee Instructor role.

To instruct groups you will need a national governing body qualification as an instructor but personal proficiency certificates may be a prerequisite for these awards. Full details on the qualifications required to teach specific activities can be found on our outdoor job profile pages.
